Landscape Interrupted Artist's Statement | Douglas Barkey

These are photographs of the landscape, but their genesis is the means of creation: the movement of the camera during exposure strips away a resemblance of the landscape by separating the light reflected off the surface from its source and disrupting its appearance. The resulting image is constructed of these fragments of light, which are stretched, flattened, twisted, layered and made transparent. Often nature is depicted with a static still quality rather than as a space where constant change takes place over time. The nature these photographs render is one of surging energy, as if geological time were fast forwarded. The language of landscape photography is replaced by a visual vocabulary more akin to abstract painting than to photography, but these images are uniquely photographic as they are impacted only by the use of a slow shutter speed from 1/8th to 1/2 of a second. This body of work explores a resemblance of the landscape activated by the camera and beyond our vision. These are images that the recording device discovers and the photographer translates; an invisible and hidden space revealed through the photograph.

Estas imágenes revelan un espacio en la naturaleza y el tiempo que sólo existe a través de la exposición fotográfica: la génesis de estas imágenes es el medio de creación. La cámara móvil va descubriendo una imagen semejante al objeto- la luz que se refleja en la superficie es una entidad separada de su fuente. Esta imagen se construye de fragmentos de luz que se estrechan, se aplanan, se tuercen y se hacen transparentes atravez del uso de velocidades de 1/8 a 1/2 segundo de exposición. Este cuerpo de trabajo explora una realidad que está constantemente cambiando y donde existe una energía oculta bajo la superficie. Estas son las imágenes que el aparato electrónico fotográfico descubre y el fotógrafo traduce. Estos son objetos visuales semejantes a la naturaleza, un tipo de espacio sagrado escondido que ha sido capturado y revelado mediante la fotografía.
